Many people assume a QR code only works with a phone. When a code shows up in a Zoom call, a PDF invoice, or a Slack screenshot, they reach for another device. You do not have to.
Windows and Mac both give you practical ways to read a code on the computer itself: a webcam for printed codes, screenshot tools for on-screen codes, browser helpers like Google Lens, and a local image decoder when you want the payload to stay in the tab.
This guide walks through the main methods, what each one is good for, and how to stay safer when you decode unfamiliar codes.
On Windows 10 or 11, the best method depends on whether the code is printed, already on your screen, or saved as a file.
If the code is on paper or on a second phone or tablet, the Camera app is often the fastest path—as long as your PC has a webcam.
Limitation: this path needs a live camera feed. It will not decode a PNG or screenshot sitting on disk.
If you do not see a barcode control: open Camera settings, enable experimental camera features if offered, restart the app, and try again. Some Windows builds hide the control entirely—use Method 2 or 3 instead.
When the QR already fills part of your monitor, Snipping Tool on Windows 11 can decode it without a phone or webcam.
Limitation: this convenience path is a Windows 11 feature set; Windows 10 users should use Google Lens or a browser decoder instead.
If the code is an image in Chrome (a webpage or a file opened in a tab), Lens can read it in a few clicks—on Windows and Mac.
If the code is a CSS background or part of a larger graphic, right-click may fail. Take a tight screenshot, open the screenshot in a Chrome tab, then run Lens again.
When the code is a download, email attachment, or screenshot file, upload it to a decoder that runs in the page. On Make a QR → Decode, image reading is built to stay in the browser tab—you can confirm in the network panel while you work. That is useful for invoices, badges, and any code you would rather not send to a random third-party site.
macOS does not mirror the iPhone Camera experience. The Mac Camera app is not a full QR reader. You still have solid options.
Same flow as Windows: right-click an image in Chrome → Search with Google Lens. For a file on disk, drag it into a new Chrome tab first.
On newer macOS versions, Control-click a QR image in Safari. If the system recognizes the pattern, you may see an option to open the decoded link. If the menu item is missing, screenshot the code and use Lens or Decode.
With a Mac on recent macOS and an iPhone on the same Apple ID (Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on), Continuity Camera lets the phone act as a camera input. Point the iPhone at a printed code and complete the scan on the Apple side of the stack. Exact prompts vary by OS version—if Continuity does not appear, fall back to Decode or Lens.
